Plant a Lasting Legacy with the North York Moors Trust
Earlier this year the North York Moors Trust announced the launch of our new initiative, “Planting a Lasting Legacy,” coinciding with World Environment Day.
The initiative aims to plant hundreds of new trees in the National Park to address the nature and climate crises and raise vital funds for the Trust’s ongoing charitable projects which support nature and people through conservation, connection, and recreation activities, such as:
Trust Treks: Guided wellness walks connecting people with nature to improve mental health.
Stepping Stones to Nature: A project to connect school children with nature and the North York Moors National Park, supporting their wellbeing, education, and development.
Trees can be purchased to celebrate life milestones, commemorate loved ones, or simply as a way of giving back to nature and supporting the Trust’s charitable endeavours.
The Trust is working with staff from the North York Moors National Park to identify species best suited for the conditions at the planting site. The focus will be on native broadleaf species, such as oak, aspen, and hazel.
Planting a tree is one of the most impactful ways to address the nature and climate crises. Trees provide shelter and food for wildlife, create calming spaces for people to enjoy and boost their health and wellbeing, improve air quality, capture and store carbon, help reduce flooding, and enhance resilience to adverse weather.
Purchased trees will be planted on Levisham Brow, an accessible and tranquil location on the Levisham Moor and Hole of Horcum walk in the beautiful North York Moors National Park. The area already boasts diverse moorland, woodland, and grassland habitat for wildlife.
The public have until the end of October to purchase trees directly from the North York Moors Trust. Planting will take place between November and March when trees are dormant, allowing their roots to settle and establish before the warmer months.
James Metcalfe, Director of the North York Moors Trust, said:
“Purchasing trees through the North York Moors Trust’s initiative allows you to celebrate significant occasions or commemorate the life of a loved one by planting a lasting legacy that benefits nature and future generations. It will also help fund our projects, which support both nature and people to thrive.
“Planting a tree with the Trust is a direct way to help forge a healthy, resilient, and secure future.”
