Planting a lasting legacy together.
Celebrating life's milestones and commemorating the ones we love is a deeply personal and meaningful experience.
At the North York Moors Trust, we believe in creating lasting legacies that not only honour these meaningful moments and memories but also contribute to the preservation of our natural heritage.
Why we are planting trees
Planting a tree is one of the most impactful ways you can contribute to the protection of our precious environment and reversing the nature and climate crises.
Trees provide homes and food for wildlife, create calm and natural spaces for people to boost their health and wellbeing, improve the quality of the air that we breath, absorb carbon, help reduce flooding, and make nature and communities more resilient to adverse weather.
You will be helping to plant a lasting legacy to pass down to future generations.
When we plant a tree and put down roots, we turn our hope and aspiration for a healthy and secure future into a reality.
By choosing to plant a tree with us, you are making a positive and proactive difference to our planet and creating a lasting legacy that we can pass on to future generations.
Our fundraising objective
The North York Moors Trust is dedicated to supporting nature, people, and communities to thrive in the North York Moors National Park and surrounding areas, such as Scarborough and Teesside.
Our projects focus on reviving the health of both nature and people, through conservation, connection or recreation.
Our projects rely on the generosity of our donors and grants to power our work.
Funds raised will be used to plant your tree, as well as helping to maintain our existing projects like Trust Treks or forthcoming projects like Stepping Stones to Nature, which will connect children from Teesside with nature and the North York Moors National Park.
With your support we can continue to deliver positive impacts for nature and people.
You can find out more about our projects here.
Purchasing a tree
When you purchase a tree you are not just planting a lasting legacy, celebrating a significant occasion, or commemorating a loved one, you are also helping to fund our projects and the positive impact we have for nature, people, and communities.
You can plant a tree and help us connect people with nature to boost their health and wellbeing from £25.00.
Please contact us using the form below to purchase your tree.
Where we are planting trees in 2024
In November 2024 we will be planting your tree on the Levisham Estate, 1,400 hectares of moorland, woodland, and grassland and a diverse range of habitats.
The estate is owned by the North York Moors National Park Authority and is located a few miles north of Pickering.
We expect to plant trees at Levisham Brow, a tranquil location surrounded by North Riding and Dalby forests to the south, and Levisham Moor to the north.
The site is located on a public right of way - a footpath connecting Levisham and Lockton villages.
Dedicating Your Tree
Let us know the significance behind your tree. Whether you are celebrating a wedding, a birthday, an anniversary, or commemorating the life of a loved one, we are giving you the power to commemorate a moment or memory in a sustainable way that also helps to tackle climate change, create homes for wildlife, and safeguard the health and wellbeing of nature and people for years to come.
How it works
Certifying Your Tree
We will work with you, upon purchase of your tree, to appropriately recognise your contribution through a card or certificate. This will include how many trees you have purchased and their significance to you and your family, where they will be planted, and when tree planting is due to take place.
Planting Your Tree
Tree planting season runs from November through to March, giving trees the best possible start. We plant trees during this window whilst they are dormant and to minimise the impact tree planting can have on neighbouring wildlife. Volunteers will plant your tree, along with others purchased by individuals and families. We will let you know when we expect to plant your tree closer to the season, but we expect this to be in November 2024.
Visiting Your Tree
We take the upmost care when we select locations. We aim to ensure our tree planting supports nature and compliments the good work other organisations are undertaking. We plant trees on land that is freely accessible to the public, and as close to a public right of way as possible, to provide you with the opportunity to visit the site for years to come.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
We plant trees in locations where we have identified a specific need, where they are likely to have the greatest benefit for nature, and the best chance of thriving.
We are committed to planting trees on land that is freely accessible to the public. A lot of work goes in behind the scenes to get the correct permissions in place to conduct tree planting, so it is not possible to specify other locations at this time.
The Trust works with the Conservation Team at the North York Moors National Park to identify the right location each year.
-
We plant native broadleaf species, such as oak, aspen, and hazel.
Some tree species are more suitable for certain environments than others (soil type, drainage). We work with specialists to plant the right native tree in the right location to create a thriving and sustainable ecosystem.
Given the volume of trees we aim to plant we do not currently offer you a choice of species, but we will let you know which species we have planted.
-
Due to the scale of tree planting it is not currently possible to place individual plaques or tags on trees.
We will inform you when your tree has been planted, photos from the planting days, and the location of your tree.
-
A team of volunteers who have received specific training, and will be accompanied by a specialist, will plant the trees on your behalf.
If you would like to find out how to volunteer in the North York Moors National Park, and what that involves, let us know and we will be happy to put you in touch with the Volunteering Team the North York Moors National Park Authority.

We are a small, independent charity striving for a thriving, healthy and resilient future for local communities, people, and nature.
By purchasing a tree you are also supporting our projects and powering the impact we have when we connect people with nature and unlock the health and wellbeing benefits nature provides.
It is important when we use nature to benefit our health, wellbeing, and development, that we give something back to nature too. This is one way we are able to give back and support nature, so nature can continue to support us.
-
We aim to announce our next tree planting location at the end of each tree planting season in March or April.
Our next planting location will be near the village of Levisham. We are aiming to plant trees in November 2024.

Unfortunately, there is currently no viable alternative to plastic tree guards. However, as soon as there is a suitable alternative we will use these. In the mean time we commit to the removal and recycling of the plastic tree guard once it is no longer needed. We use tree guards to protect the tree (they are edible snacks for deer and rabbits) and to ensure the tree has the best chance of thriving.
